Forvie National Nature Reserve is a vast area of grass covered duneland and blown sand between the Ythan Estuary and coastal village of Collieston on the Aberdeenshire coast in the far north-east of Scotland some ten miles to the north of the city of Aberdeen. The Ordnance Survey used its highest point at 57 metres to place a triangulation pillar near the centre of the reserve just under a mile from the coast. The sturdy pillar is in good condition and the views are wide ranging across the area, from the North Sea to the south and east, and westwards inland to the Aberdeenshire countryside.

STEEPNESS: A gentle gradient to the highest point.

TERRAIN: Grass covered duneland.

ACCESSIBILITY: Reached from the west from the A957 at the bridge over the River Ythan north of the large village of Newburgh, and also from Collieston on the coast from the north-east. Both are just over a mile away from the centrally located pillar via small tracks carved out of the grassy terrain.

NAVIGATION: The pillar can be seen in clear conditions from a good distance away in both directions. From the west, a narrow path heads northwards from the main track which continues east towards the coast. From Collieston, the path branches to the right from the coastal path after rounding the cove of Perthudden. From this path the route to the pillar heads north-westwards up to the highest point.

DANGER: Navigational issues if under sea fret or haar coming in off the sea.

Type of Trigpoint: Triangulation Pillar

Condition: Good

Number on Flush Bracket: S7237
