Huis te Riviere (ook wel genoemd Huis Mathenesse of Slot Mathenesse) is het oudste bekende rechthoekige kasteel in het graafschap Holland. Het kasteel is gebouwd door Aleid van Holland in 1262 en stond in Schiedam (Zuid-Holland); restanten zijn te vinden aan de Broersvest in (3111 GB) Schiedam.
De naam "Huis Mathenesse" verwijst naar de naam van de ambachtsheerlijkheid, Mathenesse, die Aleid van Holland in 1260 van Dirk van Bokel kocht.
Restanten van de donjon, die deel uitmaakte van dit kasteel, zijn vandaag de dag te zien in het centrum van Schiedam naast het Schiedamse stadskantoor aan de Broersvest. De ruïne is niet te bezichtigen, maar kan wel vanaf de openbare weg bekeken worden.
Naast de ruïne is in 1997 een kunstwerk met de beeltenis van Aleid van Holland geplaatst ('Vrouwe Aleida').
Het kasteel werd gesticht door gravin Aleid van Holland, dochter van Floris IV en zuster van Graaf Willem II die sneuvelde op 28 januari 1256 te Hoogwoud. Gravin Aleida huwde met Jan van Avesnes. Zij bouwde als tol voor de Maas een donjon. Deze werd verder uitgebouwd met een ringmuur en een licht schuin overhoekse toren. Van deze toren naar de donjon liep een, mogelijk overdekte, loopbrug. De donjon maakt aan de voet een enigszins verzakte indruk. Tijdens de bouw ging de donjon verzakken door een kreekje dat daar onder de grond liep. De bodem, weliswaar verland doch drassig door de veenachtige grondstructuur, kon de zware fundering niet dragen. De toren werd deels afgebroken en herbouwd. Na de verwoesting door de legers van Willem Nagel in 1426 werd het kasteel in een meer bewoonbare staat hersteld.

De voorburcht vertoonde overeenkomsten met de voorburcht van de Doornenburg te Bemmel in de Betuwe. Na het herstel werd er een hof geplaatst. De toegang tussen hoofdburcht en hof werd gevormd door een loopbrug zoals landmeter Potter weergaf in een kaart die behoorde bij het Heilige Geestgasthuis. Deze kaart bevindt zich nu in het gemeentearchief van Schiedam.
Jarenlang heeft de ruïne vrij gestaan in het centrum van de stad. Na archeologische opgravingen door het BOOR werd het stadskantoor uitgebreid op het terrein naast de ruïne. Het stadskantoor benadert de ruïne aan twee kanten tot slechts enkele meters.

Huis te Riviere (also called Huis Mathenesse or Slot Mathenesse) is the oldest known rectangular castle in the county of Holland. The castle was built by Aleid van Holland in 1262 and was located in Schiedam (South Holland); remnants can be found at the Broersvest in (3111 GB) Schiedam.
The name "Huis Mathenesse" refers to the name of the craftsmanship, Mathenesse, which Aleid van Holland bought from Dirk van Bokel in 1260.
Remains of the keep, which was part of this castle, can be seen today in the center of Schiedam next to the Schiedam municipal office on the Broersvest. The ruin cannot be visited, but can be viewed from the public road.
In 1997 a work of art depicting Aleid van Holland was placed next to the ruins ('Vrouwe Aleida').
The castle was founded by Countess Aleid van Holland, daughter of Floris IV and sister of Count Willem II who was killed in action on 28 January 1256 in Hoogwoud. Countess Aleida married Jan van Avesnes. She built a keep as a toll for the Meuse. This was further expanded with a ring wall and a slightly oblique tower. From this tower to the keep ran a, possibly covered, walkway. The keep makes a slightly sagging impression at the foot. During construction, the keep subsided by a creek that ran underground. The soil, although moored but swampy due to the peaty soil structure, could not support the heavy foundation. The tower was partly demolished and rebuilt. After the destruction by Willem Nagel's armies in 1426, the castle was restored to a more habitable state.

The outer bailey showed similarities with the outer bailey of the Doornenburg in Bemmel in the Betuwe. After the restoration, a court was placed. The entrance between the main castle and the courtyard was formed by a footbridge, as surveyor Potter showed in a map that belonged to the Heilige Geestgasthuis. This map is now in the municipal archives of Schiedam.
For years the ruin stood free in the center of the city. After archaeological excavations by BOOR, the municipal office was expanded on the site next to the ruin. The municipal office approaches the ruin on two sides to just a few meters.
