There are two historical markers at this road side pull out, each describing an engagement on September 10, 1863. One marker names the skirmish as the
Battle of Bayou Fourche; the other, as the Battle of Little Rock. During this engagement a Union force of about 15,000 defeated Confederate defenders numbering about 7,750. The Confederates held strong defensive positions in this area on the north side of the river, but were dislodged by artillery and withdrew to Little Rock. The city fell soon afterwards. This marker, comprised of stone and a brass plaque, gives no history but provides a comprehensive list of the units involved.
This battlefield site, like many others in the area, is threatened by the growth of the city and proposed expansion of the Little Rock National Airport, which is just to the west.
