In 1672 there were two redoubts in Nieuwerbrug to prevent the French army from crossing the narrow water line over the Rhine dikes. It was one of the five major posts along the line. It is best to pause here for a moment.
By placing two cannons in the village, we want to restore the military past.
Next to the toll bridge, in the garden of the Brugkerk, a cannon welcomes the ships sailing on the Oude Rijn. Next to the Wierickebrug, he greets cyclists and motorists who drive through the old fort unnoticed. The two guns are replicas that we were able to take over from the Bataviawerf.

In 1672 lagen in Nieuwerbrug twee schansen om te voorkomen dat het Franse leger over de Rijndijken de smalle waterlinie konden oversteken. Het was één van de vijf belangrijke posten langs de linie. Hier mogen we tegenwoordig best even bij stil staan.
Door twee kanonnen in het dorp te plaatsen, willen we het militaire verleden weer in ere herstellen.
Naast de tolbrug, in de tuin van de Brugkerk, verwelkomt een kanon de schepen die over de Oude Rijn varen. Naast de Wierickebrug begroet hij fietsers en automobilisten, die ongemerkt door het oude fort rijden. De twee kanonnen zijn replica’s die we van de Bataviawerf konden overnemen.
