The Thomas P. O'Neill Jr. Tunnel was built from 1995 to 2003, officially opening the northbound section on March 29th, 2003. The southbound opened on December 20th, 2003. The tunnel is named after Tip O'Neill Jr. who was the 47th speaker of the House of Representatives and a representative of Boston.
