The enormous trident is held in the left hand of Raymond Kaskey's nine-ton, hammered-copper statue Portlandia (1984), the second-tallest beaten-copper statue in the world (second only to the Statue of Liberty). Portlandia is about a third of Liberty's size. The stately figure is based on Lady Commerce, from old Portland's city seal.Portlandia is located above the entrance to the kitschy, post-modern city services Portland Building (1982) at 1120 SW 5th Avenue, between SW Madison and SW Main Streets. The building, designed by Michael Graves, is Portland's most controversial building, loved and hated with great intensity. It has been called "an overdecorated birthday cake," "an enlarged jukebox," and "the oversized, beribboned Christmas package." For the best view, go to the top of the escalator across the street from Portlandia.
