From the Saltwire: "Error in plaque honouring two John Hamilton Grays - The plaque accompanying a bronze statue unveiled on Great George Street Thursday has sized up two Fathers of Confederation named John Hamilton Gray as a couple of Greys.
The statue depicts John Hamilton Gray, the former premier of P.E.I., and John Hamilton Gray, a politician from New Brunswick, engaged in animated conversation.
The heading on the plaque, however, reads: John Hamilton Greys.
The typo was noticed at the unveiling, notes Aaron Hansen, project manager with the Charlottetown Area Development Corporation, which funded the $165,000 project along with the City of Charlottetown, P.E.I. 2014 Inc., The Great George Hotel and The Gray Group.
“Someone said ‘wait a second, that’s spelled wrong,’’’ says Hansen.
“What went through my mind was ‘ah shoot, how did this happen?’’’
Hansen believes several sets of eyes would have proofed the proposed inscription for the plaque, which in part reads: “It is an odd coincidence that at the meeting of the 23 delegates at the Charlottetown Conference in September 1864 that two men would have the same name.’’’
Odd too that the two men named John Hamilton Gray are collectively entitled John Hamilton Greys prominently on the top of the plaque.
“It’s really, really unfortunate, but we will have it repaired,’’ says Hansen. “We will have that changed.’’
In fact, the entire plaque must be replaced at a cost of about $1,000.
The typo will remain on display for the eight weeks or so required to replace the plaque.
Looking for a silver lining in this gray area, Hansen says he can live with the typographical error considering how well the statue turned out.
“It’s one of the nicest public art installations in Charlottetown,’’ he says." (
