The Mississippi River originates in northern Minnesota and flows 2340 miles to the Gulf of Mexico. Along the way, it touches ten different U.S. states. In 2022, the U.S. Postal Service issued a set of ten stamps each showing a river scene from these ten states. The stamp for Illinois shows one of the limestone bluffs directly across the river from Portage Des Sioux, Missouri.
This area of the Mississippi River is sometimes called Alton Lake due to the locks and dam located at Alton, IL. It is a recreation area noted for boating and fishing. The provided coordinates are for the “Our Lady of the Rivers Shrine” in Portage Des Sioux. This shrine is a 25 ft. tall statue of the Virgin Mary designed by Norma McClory. It was dedicated in 1957 in remembrance of the flood of 1951 which nearly destroyed the town.
