This long-handled water pump is located in the Winegar Cemetery in Byron Township, Michigan. The Red Jacket Manufacturing Company of Davenport, Iowa made the pump and its name is included on the body of the pump.
“The Red Jacket Pump Co. traces its history to two men in Davenport named Chandler & Blodgett. They had formed a partnership selling pumps in what would become the Davenport Pump Co. in 1875. When they ran into financial difficulties, H. D. Lafferty, a partner in the Toledo (Ohio) Pump Company proposed a consolidation between the two that became Red Jacket Manufacturing Co. in 1887, continuing business at the former company's location on the northeast corner of Third and Farnam streets. The popular and successful "Red Jacket" well-water pumps were of high quality and easy to repair. The company and the pumps they produced derived their name from “Red Jacket,” a Seneca Indian chief and famed orator. He was decorated with the first Congressional Medal of Honor by George Washington for his help to American patriots during the Revolutionary War.”
