This statue was presented to the City of Oshkosh, Wisconsin in 1907 by John Hicks, 1847-1917, a former U.S. ambassador to Chile and a local newspaper publisher, "to the memory of the Wisconsin men who fought in the war for the Union 1861-1865". Mr. Hicks presented ten bronze statues to the city between 1907 and the time of his death.
