Schoonhoven used to be a frotress in the NoordHollandse Waterlinie (North-Holland Water defense line). In times of peril, a line of fields would be inundated to block the passage of armies. Schoonhoven was fortified because of it's strategic position in this line and along the Lek river. A series of walking routes have been created for locals and tourists at key places in the Noordhollandse Waterlinie.
There is a 1,5 km long walking route along Schoonhoven itself, the Waterlinie Ommetje. This should take you about two hours and you cab see all the sights of the city of Schoonhoven along the pathway. There is also the Cabauwse Jacobsroute, a 14,3 km walking route which also starts here. This should take you about a morning or an afternoon and it will take you along some very typical Dutch countryside. The walking trips start at the Stationsplein. This used to be the railway and tramway station of Schoonhoven. A sign displays some information of the walking routes and the history of the NoordHollandse Waterlinie .
