Adjacent to the fountain was an open-air market, during the 17/1800 The fountain was predominately used to water the livestock.

The Fountain has been made from local granite, the fountain bowl flows out through animal mouth spouts which appear to be on the four cardinal points of a compass, and within the roof of the roof is a mosaic that depicts "The Seven Sister, the ancient mariner's navigational stars (Pleiades)
Throughout its history, the fountain has moved a couple of times, the most recent after being sympathetically restored.
Note: in the 1950 the local taxi drivers used the water to wash their vehicles
