Verwoestende brand!
Onweer
Op 23 juni 1900, een zomerse zaterdagmorgen, breekt er boven Harmelen een hevig
onweer uit. Het noodweer houdt de mensen binnenshuis, zodat pas na enige tijd
duidelijk wordt dat rond 11 uur de bliksem is ingeslagen in de toren van de Nederlands
hervormde kerk. Een grote vlam en rookwolken vanuit de toren wijzen erop dat het
goed mis is. Er wordt alarm geslagen en weldra zijn de twee gemeentelijke
brandspuiten met volle kracht aan het werk aan een, naar later blijkt, onmogelijke taak.
De toren en vervolgens de kerk staan al in lichterlaaie tegen de tijd dat de brandspuiten
in werking komen. De in allerijl te hulp geroepen grote stoombrandspuit uit Utrecht
arriveert en weet het vuur tenslotte te doven, terwijl de gemeentelijke brandspuiten de
aangrenzende percelen nat houden en een uitbreiding van de brand weten te
voorkomen. De smeulende resten van het gebouw zijn de dag erna voor honderden
ramptoeristen de aanleiding voor een gezellig zomers dagje uit.
Herbouw
De kerk en de toren moeten als verloren worden beschouwd. Tenminste, dat denken de
meeste Harmelaren. Zo niet burgemeester Van Heemstra, die de bekende Utrechtse
architect Wentink en de beroemde Amsterdamse architect Pierre Cuypers, die in de
buurt aan kasteel De Haar werkt, inschakelt om een restauratieplan te maken. In korte
tijd worden de kerk en toren opnieuw opgebouwd in min of meer dezelfde vorm als zijn
voorganger en misschien nog wel mooier, zoals sommigen vinden.
Blussen
Honderd jaar later zal een dergelijke blikseminslag in de Harmelense kerktoren
waarschijnlijk tot veel minder schade leiden. De moderne brandblusmiddelen en het
goed getrainde brandweerpersoneel van tegenwoordig werken veel sneller en
effectiever dan de beperkte pompspuiten en de overal bij elkaar geharkte
brandweerplichtige Harmelaren in 1900.
Toch is rond 1900 de tijd van het blussen met brandhaken en lange slierten van
mensen die emmertjes water moeten doorgeven vanaf de sloot naar de brandhaard, al

geruime tijd voorbij. De overheid heeft al vanaf de vijftiende eeuw regels of ‘keuren’
vastgesteld om brand te voorkomen. In de steden het eerst, want in plaatsen als
Woerden staan rond 1500 nog vooral houten, brandgevaarlijke huizen heel dicht op
elkaar. Steeds meer worden mensen verplicht hun huizen brandveilig en van steen te
bouwen. De uitvinding van de brandspuit door Jan van der Heyden in 1671 is van groot
belang: met die nieuwe spuit kun je via een slang water uit een sloot of gracht pompen
om een constante waterstraal uit die slang af te geven. Dat pompen gebeurt met de
hand. De spuiten worden steeds professioneler en ook groter: om ze te verplaatsen
worden ze van wielen voorzien en aan de meeste pompen kan meer dan één slang
worden aangesloten.
