"JOSEPH HOWE 1804 - 1873
Born in Halifax, and largely self-educated, Joe Howe in 1827 became publisher of the Novascotian. By 1836 he was his province's leading journalist and orator and most ardent spokesman. Elected that year to the Assembly, he soon led the struggle which culminated in the achievement of responsible government in 1848. During the 1860s he was an eloquent opponent of Confederation until, in 1869, having negotiated "better terms" for Nova Scotia, he agreed to enter the federal cabinet. Shortly before his death in 1873, the "Tribune of Nova Scotia" became lieutenant governor of his beloved province.
Né à Halifax et en grande partie autodidacte, Joe Howe devint en 1827 l'éditeur du Novascotian. En 1836, il était le principal journaliste et orateur de sa province et le porte-parole le plus ardent. Élu cette année-là à l'Assemblée, il mena bientôt la lutte qui aboutit à l'obtention du gouvernement responsable en 1848. Au cours des années 1860, il fut un opposant éloquent à la Confédération jusqu'à ce qu'en 1869, après avoir négocié de « meilleures conditions » pour la Nouvelle-Écosse, il accepte pour entrer au cabinet fédéral. Peu avant sa mort en 1873, le « Tribun of Nova Scotia » devint lieutenant-gouverneur de sa province bien-aimée
