Along the road from Winterwijk in the Netherlands to Vreden in Germany (or the other way round) is the Grenzubergang Gaxel (or Grensovergang Gaxel in het Nederlands). The road is and has been a very important local road. Therefore there were checks of the foreign police here at the border. The big white building used to be the foreign police headquarters. Since 1993, the border crossings between Germany and the Netherlands have been open due to European laws.
