SOURCE - ( visit link) The plaque reads - BANWELL HOUSE Formerly Miss Barnard’s Lace Shop
Lace had been sold at Banwell House since 1780 when Mary Nicholls founded the business. Miss Barnard wasthe fourth generation of her family to make and sell lace. The business supplied lace to royalty and Miss Barnard fulfilled an order for the Duke of Connaught. Her grandmother promoted one of the infamous lace schools, training young girls aged 5-15 to become skilled lace-makers, but the beauty of the product disguised a world of low wages, poor conditions, long hours and child labour. Originally sold at Honiton to travelling lace dealers, the distinctive pillow/bobbin lace made in East Devon became known as ‘Honiton lace’. The shop traded until the early 1960s.
