"Sicuramente il più noto dei pozzi di Pienza è il Pozzo dei Cani sito in piazza Pio II sull'angolo tra Corso Rossellino e Palazzo Piccolomini ... praticamente davanti al Caffeé la Posta.

Sull'architave del pozzo si legge

PIVS PP II                 MCCCCLXII

... ovvero Papa Pio II - 1462."

On the "Piazza Pio II" (Pius II Square) in Pienza is the old and beautiful "Pozzo dei Cani" (Dog's well), that was constructed in 1462. Engraved is the following text:

PIVS PP II                 MCCCCLXII

In other words: Pope Pius II - 1462.

We didn't find out, why the well is called "Dog's well".

"The travertine well in the Piazza carries the Piccolomini family crest, and was widely copied in Tuscany during the following century. The well-head resembles a fluted, shallow Etruscan Bowl. The flanking Corinthian support a classical entablature columns whose decorations are clearly based upon actual source materials."
