A beautiful monument tells the history of the Ludlow Massacre, where 21 people were killed in a pivotal moment in national labor relations. The monument is just a short drive west from I-25 (160), and signs direct vehicles to the location.
Text on the sign:
This map reflects the landscape April 19 and 20, 1914.
(Legend)
This baseball diamond hosted games on April 19, which included strikers and the militia.
At 7:20 p.m. on April 20, a train stopped along the tracks halting gunfire long enough to allow most women and children to flee.
The militia fired onto the tent colony using a machine gun set up on Water Tank Hill.
The militia camp housed a unit that consisted of members of the Colorado National Guard, mine guards and other hired guns.
Ludlow Tent Colony housed the strikes (sic) and their families during the strike.
The Death Special was a reinforced car with a Gatling gun mounted on the back operated by the Baldwin-Felts Detective Agency hired by the company to help break the strike. It periodically drove along this road and sprayed gun fire into the tent colony.
