Blue plaque by the entrance to the former Sidmouth War Memorial Service Men's Club, now the 1922 Club.
The plaque reads -
Formerly
SIDMOUTH WAR MEMORIAL
SERVICE MEN’S CLUB
Opened on 22 June 1922 by
GENERAL SIR JOHN HART DUNNE (b.1835-d.1924)
The club was built by public subscription as a social venue for
men returning from the Great War. The General was the most
senior military person locally at the time, being a veteran of
the Crimean War (1853-56) and the Second Opium War in
China (1860). Later, he was appointed Lieutenant of the Tower
of London. He played a prominent role in introducing the
Pekingese breed of dog into Britain — he brought one back
om Peking (now Beijing) and presented it to Queen Victoria.
