This trig pillar stands on the summit of Mount Battock, a 2,555 feet, 778 metre high mountain on the watershed of the Mounth in the eastern Grampians, between Glen Esk and the Forest of Birse. The mountain is the most easterly Corbett (Scottish mountain between 2,500 and 3,000 feet) and the flattish summit supports both the pillar and an adjacent stone-built shelter, the summit straddles the border of the counties of Angus and Aberdeenshire. The pillar, which is badly cracked towards its base, is a passive station with an Ordnance Survey metal sign attached. Not surprisingly, views are extensive to both lowlands and highlands, including westwards to Lochnagar and The Cairngorms.

STEEPNESS: The steep bulldozed tracks which now proliferate the area ease the gradient from both east and west. The southern approach is more taxing, with the seldom climbed northern approach having the steepest slope.

TERRAIN: Grass and Heather, with many bulldozed tracks on the approach.

ACCESSIBILTY: Most ascents are from Millden in Glen Esk to the south, which is the shortest route at 5 miles. Another longer route comes up from Glen Dye to the east.

NAVIGATION: Tracks and fenceposts are a help in mist as the summit area is not well defined. From the south a bulldozed track heads up Wester Cairn before heading eastwards along the summit ridge following a line of fenceposts to the summit. The route heading over the Hill of Saughs to the south also follows line of posts defining the county boundary, straight to the summit. From Glen Dye in the east, various tracks eventually lead to the summit.

DANGER: None, except in the late summer into autumn when the grouse shooting and deer stalking begins.
