Die Universität Bonn unterhält einen der ältesten Botanischen Gärten Deutschlands. Seit mindestens 1650 werden am Poppelsdorfer Schloss Gärten kultiviert, 1715 bis 1725 wurde der bis heute erhaltene barocke Park im französischen Stil mit exotischen Pflanzen angelegt. Seit 1819 wird er von der Universität Bonn geführt und dient der Forschung und Lehre, wird aber von etwa 140.000 Besuchern jährlich auch zur Entspannung und Erholung genutzt. Neben dem öffentlichen Garten am Poppelsdorfer Schloss gehören noch Gärten in Poppelsdorf und auf dem Venusberg zu den Botanischen Gärten.

Der Park sowie die Gewächshäuser beherbergen inzwischen rund 11.000 Pflanzenarten aus aller Welt. Der Park umfasst eine Fläche von etwa 12 Hektar beinhaltet einen großen Teich. Durch die 11 hochmodernen Schaugewächshäuser können Besucher durchgehen. Bei Botanikern ist der Botanische Garten vor allem für die jährliche Titanenwurzblüte bekannt, die bis zu drei Meter groß wird. Die Blüte ziert daher auch das Emblem des Gartens. Mit rund 300 Spezies zeigt der Garten eine der weltweit umfangreichsten Sammlungen von fleischfressenden Pflanzen, sogenannten Karnivoren.

Neben den vielen lebenden Pflanzen sind auch pflanzliche Fossilien im Botanischen Garten zu finden. Es handelt sich dabei um etwa 11 Millionen Jahre alte, konservierte Baumstämme. Sie wurden im Tagebau Garzweiler beim Braunkohleabbau entdeckt und geborgen. Sie sind nicht versteinert sondern mit Huminsäure imprägniert und daher sehr weich. Die Funde gelten als Beweis für die Existenz eines einzigartigen Sumpfwaldes in der Region im Zeitabschnitt des Miozäns. The University of Bonn maintains one of the oldest botanical gardens in Germany. Gardens have been cultivated at the Poppelsdorf Castle since at least 1650. The baroque park, which has preserved to this day, was laid out in the French style with exotic plants from 1715 to 1725. It has been run by the University of Bonn since 1819 and is used for research and teaching, but is also visited by around 140,000 people per year for relaxation and recreation. In addition to the public garden at Poppelsdorf Castle, gardens in Poppelsdorf and on the Venusberg also belong to the botanical gardens.

By now, the park and the greenhouses house around 11,000 plant species from all over the world. The park covers an area of about 12 hectares and includes a large pond. Visitors can walk through the 11 state-of-the-art greenhouses. Among botanists, the botanical garden is best known for the annual blossom of the titan arum flower, which grows up to three meters tall. The flower therefore also adorns the emblem of the garden. With around 300 species, the garden has one of the world's most extensive collections of carnivorous plants.

In addition to the many living plants, plant fossils can also be found in the botanical garden. These are about 11 million year old, conserved tree trunks. They were discovered and salvaged in the Garzweiler opencast mine during lignite mining. They are not petrified but impregnated with humic acid and are therefore very soft. The finds are considered evidence of the existence of a unique swamp forest in the region in the Miocene period. An information board provides information about the historical value of the inconspicuous tree trunks.

Opening hours:
April till October: Daily from 10:00 to 18:00, on Thursday till 20 Uhr, closed on Saturday.
November till March: Monday till Friday from 10:00 to 16:00.

On Sunday and holiday 3 Euro, reduced 1 Euro, on weekdays free.
