The Esquimalt Veterans Cemetery - commonly known as God's Acre - was consecrated on July 14, 1868 as a final resting place for Royal Navy officers. The cemetery was originally consecrated as a Christian cemetery, but the chapel was left unconsecrated so it could be used by all sects.
The construction of the chapel is unique in that it made use of many different kinds of wood from around the British Commonwealth, including camphor, teak, ironwood, and mahogany.
The
Canadian Register of Historic Places describes the structure of the chapel:
The Veterans’ Cemetery Chapel, a modest chapel of simple and functional design, is a dignified place of worship located in the pastoral setting of the Veterans’ Cemetery. Its rectangular form, clad in clapboard with contrasting corner trim, is surmounted by a gable roof. A small steeple, projecting chancel, and Gothic-inspired door and window surrounds complete its design.
The chapel is still used today - with special permission - for marriages, christenings, memorial services, and other special events.
