First Congregational Church of Christ organized in Buckland in 1785. Their church building was designed in the Federal style by architect John Ames and construction began in 1793 and the church was completed in 1800. The First Congregational Church of Christ is known locally as the Mary Lyon Church in recognition of its most famous parishioner who went on to become a promoter of women's rights and founder of Mt. Holyoke Seminary which became Mt. Holyoke College.

The rectangular church has a gable roof. A set of steps leads up a double entrance separated by a rectangular window with black shutters. The sections are separated by five square piasters. Above the entrances is a large pediment. Rising from the apex of the roof is a steeple with a square base, a belfry with two louvered windows on each side and an octagonal spire on an octagonal base. The spire is topped by a weather vane.

The northwest side of the church has three rectangular stained glass windows. The southeast side has an extension with a gable roof and an auxiliary entrance on the gable end.
