Clifton was founded in 1873 with the discovery of a major copper deposit. By the 1880's the town was booming to the extent that it needed a jail. A local stonemason was hired to construct the jail into a solid granite cliff. Having completed the job, the stonemason proceeded to get drunk and start firing his pistol. He was arrested and became the first occupant of his own jail. The jail was flooded and was abandoned in 1906. It was rebuilt in 1962 and retains its original bars. The cells are below ground level and in the rock. Two windows in the cliff face provide air to the cells. It is occasionally unlocked for visitors.
