In Neece, Texas, the intersection of FM 48 (Neece 5) and 1268 was made famous in the final scene of the Tom Hanks movie Castaway. His character Chuck Noland has returned to civilization after being stranded alone on an island for four years. The final scene has him at this intersection, wondering what path to take for his future. Sadly, the actress who is in this scene with him was diagnosed with a rare cancer and passed away in 2018.
From Atlas Obscura:
The final scene of Cast Away is one of the most noteworthy endings of a film in the early 2000s, with a long-lost package finally finding its way home, and protagonist Chuck Noland (played by Tom Hanks) finding himself at both a metaphorical and literal crossroads in his life.
Film buffs are able to stand on the same spot as Tom Hanks, as marked by a red dot on the road, and recreate the scene in ways they deem fit. Since the filming, the dirt road has been paved over and windmills now scatter the plains.
The intersection near Mobeetie, Texas is a postcard for the middle of nowhere, as described by a line at the culmination of the film:
“Well, that’s 83 South. And this road here will hook you up with I-40 East. Um…if you turn right, that’ll take you to Amarillo, Flagstaff, California. And if you head back that direction, you’ll find a whole lot of nothin’ all the way to Canada.”
