The South Congregational Church Society was officially organized on June 28, 1824. Their church was dedicated on November 3, 1825. In 1915 the church was incorporated as the South Congregational Church in Amherst.

The projecting entrance of the church is three bays wide which are separated by four Doric piasters. The central entrance is flakked by to shorter entrances all three entrances are topped by a fan window. On the second level is a large three part palladian style window flanked by rectangular windows.

The two story high main block has a gable roof. Rising from the roof is a three part steeple. The lower part is a square tower followed by a square belfry with a railing and openings with rounded tops. On top is a circular tower with alternating piasters. The tower is topped by a sphere and a weather vane.

The sides of the main block are six bays wide with a circular window on upper part of the first bay and rectangular windows on both the upper and lower levels of the remaining five bays.
