-------------

The Franco-African War Memorial commemorates the French and North African Franco-Colonial military units deployed in Nieuwpoort and its environs during the First World War.

It was built with stones from the houses that were destroyed in 14-18; the enamel plates are by Missean Chris. The engraved visible urn was made by Tavares. The monument was erected (execution) by the Nieuwpoort Community School Construction Department. The country urns that brought the lands of the different countries to Nieuwpoort were made by Magda Bouillon. The bronze crown on the glass cover stone is a family heirloom from the Pilgrim family and was donated for this monument. The various ambassadors, after transferring their grounds into the blue urn, were given back their own urn, but filled with grounds from the battlefields of Nieuwpoort.

The monument is dedicated to the Breton FM and the "soldats d''outre-mer" (zouaven, spahis, goumiers and tirailleurs). The Belgian urn was, in 2016, handed over to the German ambassador as a symbol of Nieuwpoort, city of peace. This was one of the last decisions of the late Burg. R. Crabbe (+2016) shortly before his death.
