The first St John the Baptist Church was built between 1842 and 1843 to designs by the architect George Alexander. It was known locally as the 'Black Church'.
The present church was rebuilt between 1892 and 1904 by J. A. Chatwin and incorporated the tower and spire of the earlier church.
The clock face is a typical 3-ring design in blue, with 1 and 5 minute markers in between the outer two rings in gold on a red background, and Roman numeral hours between the inner two rings in gold on a blue background. Gold hands are mounted in the centre on a reddish background.
