Following a concert in Clear Lake, IA on the evening of February 2, 1959, Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and J.P. Richardson charted a plane to get to their next concert. The inexperienced pilot, Roger Peterson flew them out of the nearby Mason City airport. They crashed and died moments later. The death of those three stars has inspired several songs and movies and memorials. American Pie sings of the day the music died as a sad end to three promising careers.
