Commemorartive Park:
a desired meeting place

This park, just like the old courthouse which is across the street Principale, is a gift from the founder of the city, Charles Symmes. In fact, it's him who, in 1848, donated land to the municipality for the construction of a square and public buildings.

This square quickly became the heart of Aylmer. Local farmers come sell their production there, notably by taking Chemin Eardley which leads there directly. One can easily believe that it is also here that exchanges news and that we come to stroll as soon as the weather is nice.

Long called the "Place du Marché", the park changed its name in 1921 when a monument was erected there in memory of the soldiers who gave their lives during the First World War (1914-1918).

It was then modified to also commemorate the wars of 1939-1945 and
1950-1953. For several years, the Commemorative Park, as if to sign a return over time, once again hosts a market on Sundays in summer and autumn, for the greatest happiness of the citizens.

The pretty properties of Broad and Symmes streets

The proximity of the courthouse had an influence on the profession of owners who settled around the park. Thus, the houses at 10 and 12 Broad Street, in a few decades have seen a succession of occupants who have assumed different official functions such as judge, lawyer, municipal councillor or mayor. Since the park has been a sought-after meeting place since its creation, the beautiful residences continued to flourish there at the beginning of the 20th century. This is the case for example at 81 and 87 Symmes Street.
