De Hilversumse scoutinggroep St.Paulus is opgericht op 3 september 1931 als onderdeel van de toenmalige “Katholieke Verkenners”. In 1939 werd door het kerkbestuur besloten om op het terrein van de Vituskerk aan het Achterom een aantal volkstuinen op te offeren om daar een groot nieuw clubhuis voor de welpen en verkenners te bouwen. In 1971 kregen de St.Paulusgroep te maken met de structuurplannen van de gemeente Hilversum waardoor we het grote speelveld moesten prijsgeven voor de aanleg van de nieuwe Schapenkamp die het begin was van een 4-baans city-ring. Er werden in die jaren veel gebouwen rond het clubhuis gesloopt maar het Scouting hoofdkwartier bleef dankzij vasthoudendheid van het Paulusbestuur overeind in de strijd.

In het begin van 1980 kreeg de St.Paulusgroep te horen dat het clubhuis gesloopt zou worden om plaats te maken voor een nieuw te bouwen centrumschool. Het bestuur heeft 5 jaar lang moeten knokken om die bouwplannen tegen te houden, maar het is uiteindelijk gelukt om het clubhuis te behouden. Op zaterdagavond 12 september 1992 sloeg het noodlot toe en werd een groot deel van het prachtige clubhuis aan de Schapenkamp 206 door een uitslaande brand verwoest. Nog geen uur tevoren hadden de laatste paulusleden het gebouw verlaten. De brand blijkt in het scoutslokaal te zijn ontstaan, het lokaal dat bij de brand in 1948 werd gespaard. De brandweer weet de helft van het clubhuis te redden, maar het kan niet langer gebruikt worden.

De keuze voor een nieuw gebouw viel uiteindelijk op een prachtig gelegen terrein langs de heide aan de Orionlaan. Na 5 jaar kon hier prachtig nieuw groepshuis, nu eigendom van de St.Paulusgroep, worden gerealiseerd. Het gebouw is ontworpen door de architecten Fred Greven en Maarten Min en is met een vegetatiedak helemaal aangepast aan de natuurlijke omgeving. Op 6 september 1997 werd het nieuwe clubhuis “De Orion” feestelijk geopend. Al direct na de opening was de aanmelding van nieuwe jeugdleden zo groot dat er een lange wachtlijst van kinderen uit de directe omgeving van de Orionlaan ontstond. Nog steeds is de belangstelling van nieuwe jeugdleden enorm dus er is voor de vele vrijwilligers van de St. Paulusgroep nog genoeg te doen.

The Hilversum scouting group St.Paulus was founded on September 3, 1931 as part of the then "Catholic Scouts". In 1939, the church board decided to sacrifice a number of allotments on the grounds of the Vituskerk on the Achterom in order to build a large new clubhouse for the cubs and scouts. In 1971 the St.Paulusgroep had to deal with the structure plans of the municipality of Hilversum, which meant that we had to give up the large playing field for the construction of the new Schapenkamp, which was the start of a 4-lane city ring. Many buildings around the clubhouse were demolished in those years, but the Scouting headquarters survived the struggle thanks to the tenacity of the Paulus board.

In the beginning of 1980 the St.Paulusgroep was told that the clubhouse would be demolished to make way for a new center school to be built. The board had to fight for 5 years to stop those building plans, but in the end they managed to keep the clubhouse. On Saturday evening, September 12, 1992, disaster struck and a large part of the beautiful clubhouse at Schapenkamp 206 was destroyed by a blazing fire. Less than an hour before the last members of Paul had left the building. The fire appears to have started in the scouts' room, the room that was spared during the fire in 1948. The fire brigade manages to save half of the clubhouse, but it can no longer be used.

The choice for a new building ultimately fell on a beautifully situated site along the heath on the Orionlaan. After 5 years, a beautiful new group house, now owned by the St.Paulusgroep, could be realized here. The building was designed by the architects Fred Greven and Maarten Min and has been completely adapted to the natural environment with a green roof. On September 6, 1997, the new clubhouse “De Orion” was festively opened. Immediately after the opening, the registration of new youth members was so great that there was a long waiting list of children from the immediate vicinity of the Orionlaan. The interest of new youth members is still enormous, so there is still plenty to do for the many volunteers of the St. Paulusgroep.
