The Oregon trail developed as a wagon trail in the 1840's. It followed an older explorer trail which developed from a native American trail along the Platte River. The trail was used by some 400,000 individuals before it was made obsolete with the transcontinental railroad. The railroad followed the same ancient path across the country. In 1908 the State of Nebraska appointed a commission to identify and mark the path of the Oregon Trail. This marker was placed in 1912 as a result of the commission's work.
