Pecos Bill was a late addition to American larger-than-life folk heroes like Paul Bunyan and John Henry. Created by author Edward S. O'Reilly in a series of short stories, Pecos Bill was the greatest cowboy of them all. When his horse was thirsty, he dug the Rio Grande with a tree trunk. When west Texas suffered a drought Pecos Bill rode to California, roped a storm cloud, and brought it back; the ensuing deluge created the Gulf of Mexico. In the statue here, Pecos Bill rides a tornado that he has lassoed with a rattlesnake!
