The market hall originally opened in 1880 to replace open air market stalls. A large stone tablet on the external wall records this and the building also has a foundation tablet dated 1879.
It closed as a market in 1991 when larger, more modern premises were opened on the other side of the road but still provides a covered walk way to a car park.
As part of the Millennium celebrations a clock was erected on the front of the building to replace a clock that used to hang outside the market.
