Vernon Castle and his wife Irene were a famous nightclub dance couple who were influential in reviving dance in America. They were portrayed by Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers in the 1939 the film The Story of Vernon and Irene Castle. Vernon was also a pilot and served during WWI as a fighter pilot and later as an instructor. In 1918 he, a student, and his pet monkey were in a JN4D "Jenny" out of Benbrook Field when Vernon had to maneuver abruptly to avoid another aircraft and crashed. The student and monkey survived but Vernon was killed in the crash, which occurred near this monument. Plaques on three sides of the monument give a complete description of Vernon, his career, and this crash.
