This park perserves the coastal sections of two traditional ancient land divisions; Kaloko and Honokohau. Hundreds of Hawaiians lived here in a society comprised of fishermen, farmers, chiefs, priests, warriors, tradespeople and commoners who lived self sufficiently. The land divisions and ocean conservation had laws enforced by the land managers and religion.

Lava rock was in no shortage in this area and it was used to build many structures such as dividing walls, religious, agricultural, and fishing structures. Other structures built without lava rock included houses for the chiefs, temples and canoe manufacturing.
