Van deze boerderij op de Nachtdijk 7-9 te Cothen wordt in het archief voor het eerst melding gemaakt op 22 september 1378. Sindsdien is er veel aan veranderd: wat u nu ziet staan is rond 1650 gebouwd. De naam ‘De Winkel’ betekent in het Middelnederlands ‘Afgelegen plek’ of ‘toevluchtsoord’. Die naam is er waarschijnlijk aan gegeven omdat deze boerderij afgelegen lag, d.w.z. ver van andere huizen/dorpskernen. Ook was het regelmatig een toevluchtsoord, eerst voor (Katholieke) priesters en tijdens de 2e Wereldoorlog voor onderduikers. Rondom de boerderij lag een gracht en erachter stond een kleine kapel (de precieze plaats is onbekend). De grond hier ligt hoog (een oude stroomrug van de kromme rijn), waardoor er al vroeg mensen neerstreken.

De huidige eigenaren, familie Vernooij, heeft haar zo’n 200 jaar in bezit. In de boerderij wonen nu twee van de zeven kinderen: een dochter, die de theetuin beheert, en een zoon, die zich gespecialiseerd heeft in het restaureren van (antieke) meubels en het ontwerpen van nieuwe (een voorbeeld is de lantaarnpaal op het terras).

This farm on Nachtdijk 7-9 in Cothen is first mentioned in the archive on September 22, 1378. A lot has changed since then: what you see now was built around 1650. The name 'De Winkel' means 'Remote place' or 'Refuge' in Middle Dutch. That name was probably given because this farm was remote, i.e. far from other houses/villages. It was also regularly a refuge, first for (Catholic) priests and during the 2nd World War for people in hiding. Around the farm was a moat and behind it was a small chapel (the exact location is unknown). The ground here is high (an old ridge of the crooked Rhine), so that people settled early on.

The current owners, the Vernooij family, have owned her for about 200 years. Two of the seven children now live in the farm: a daughter, who manages the tea garden, and a son, who specializes in restoring (antique) furniture and designing new ones (an example is the lamppost on the terrace). .
