"This monument is located just behind the port of Saint-Tropez near La Ponche.

The Guillaume tower built in 980 is the oldest building in the city. This former residence of the seigneury of Saint-Tropez was occupied by the Suffren family who held the title in the 18th century.

This tower was the strong point of defense of the 1st enclosure of Saint-Tropez when it was repopulated in 1470. A defensive element facing the sea, it protected the small port and the entrance to the village, its summit platform essentially serving as a watch.

It also played the role of refuge for the population in the event of a raid, but also of occasional prison. An integral part of the seigniorial castle, it housed families from the Provençal nobility, Saint Rémy, Grasse and in the 18th century. Suffren who gave it its current name.

After having been a warehouse during the French Revolution, it housed the school of hydrography of Saint-Tropez at the beginning of the 19th century. This establishment has trained generations of cabotage and long-distance captains, Tropezians who have sailed all the seas of the globe."
