This eleven thousand barren salt plain is the largest of its type in North America. The surrounding wildlife refuge covers about 32,000 acres. Bird-watchers will enjoy a visit; over 315 species have been documented with a high diversity and abundance of waterfowl and shorebirds during fall and spring migration. Visitors are allowed to search for selenite crystals near this waymark location (but see the linked web site for season and hours). You can read more about the Salt Plains at the park's Federal Wildlife Service link below and at
this Wikipedia article.
This waymarker has been to the Salt Plains many times. If you enter to the north (from Highway 11) and park near the refuge headquarters, there are exhibits (at HQ) and hiking trails through wooded areas that are filled with local wildlife. But for the best view of the actual Salt Plains, enter on the west side (southeast of Cherokee) and drive to the WM coordinates. There you can walk out onto the actual Salt Plains and look for crystals (but again check the refuge web page for availability).
