Worship first took place here on 4th June 1879, when the church was newly completed. It was established by a Canadian missionary, Alexander Croft-Shaw, with the help and support of FUKUZAWA Yukichi, founder of Keio University.
The church buildings have been destroyed several times by fire, earthquake, and war. The present building was consecrated on St. Andrew's Day (30th November) 1996.
St. Andrew's is both a parish church and the cathedral church of the NSKK* (Nippon Sei Ko Kai) Diocese of Tokyo.
* NSKK is the Japanese part of the worldwide Anglican Communion, which had its beginnings in the English Church of the Reformation, and now has 70,000,000 members across the world.
