Sigma Kappa was founded by five women in 1874 at Colby College in Waterford, Maine. The sorority now has 122 chapters and about 172,000 members.
The history of this chapter reaches all the way back to the founders. Ida Fuller Pierce, one of the five original members, moved to Lawrence in 1912 to be closer to her niece, who was attending here. With her assistance the "Xi Chapter" of Sigma Kappa was formally initiated in 1913. The Chapter eventually outgrew their original residence and purchased this fine mansion in the 1950s. The house has been extensively renovated and modernized since that time.
