The 120-foot limestone Campanile, which houses a 53-bell carillon, is one of the most striking features on campus. Four massive wooden doors permit entry into the lowest level of the tower. These four doors are adorned with twelve relief sculptures, three on each door. Each represents some characteristic or virtue, such as "Explorer" or "Investigating." One carries the second half of the Kansas State Motto, "Per Aspera" or "Through Difficulty." Each sculpture is about thirty inches high.
