1215 erhielt Nördlingen von König Friedrich II. Stadtrechte und wurde Reichsstadt, in jenem Jahr wurde die erste Stadtmauer errichtet. Die Stadt, an der Kreuzung zweier großer Handelsstraßen (Frankfurt-Würzburg–Augsburg und Nürnberg–Ulm) gelegen, stieg zum wichtigen Handelsplatz für Getreide, Vieh, Textilien, Pelze und Metallwaren auf. Neben Frankfurt war Nördlingen eine der wichtigsten Fernhandelsmessen Deutschlands.
1238 zerstörte ein Brand einen großen Teil der Stadt, von dem sie sich rasch erholte. Bereits drei Generationen später hatten sich außerhalb der Stadtmauern eine große Zahl von Handwerkern, vor allem Gerber und Weber, angesiedelt. 1327 wurde der heute noch bestehende Mauerring gebaut, mit dem die ummauerte Stadtfläche auf das Vierfache anwuchs. Sie ist die einzige Stadtmauer Deutschlands, die einen vollständig erhaltenen, begehbaren und überdachten Wehrgang besitzt.
Das Modell befindet sich neben dem im 14. Jahrhundert erbauten Rathaus.
In 1215, Nördlingen was granted city rights by King Frederick II and became an imperial city, in which year the first city wall was built. The town, situated at the crossroads of two major trade routes (Frankfurt-Würzburg-Augsburg and Nürnberg–Ulm), rose to become an important trading centre for grain, livestock, textiles, furs and metal goods. Along with Frankfurt, Nördlingen was one of the most important long-distance trade fairs in Germany.
In 1238, a fire destroyed a large part of the town, from which it quickly recovered. Just three generations later, a large number of craftsmen, especially tanners and weavers, had settled outside the city walls. In 1327, the ring of walls that still exists today was built, increasing the walled city area fourfold. It is the only city wall in Germany that has a completely preserved, walkable and covered defence gallery.
The model is located next to the town hall built in the 14th century.
