Saint Martin, feast day of Martin of Tours On 11 November, it is Saint Martin. This children's festival is celebrated in various parts of the Netherlands, Belgium, France and Germany. On the feast day, children go trick-or-treating with lanterns. They sing a song and, if they are lucky, receive some sweets as thanks.
St Martin's Day is actually a Catholic holiday, but in most cases the connection with the faith is only tenuous nowadays. Children of all denominations take part.
The feast is celebrated on 11 November because that is the feast day of Saint Martin of Tours (c. 316-397), one of the founders of Christianity in Gaul. According to legend, this Roman soldier, born of pagan parents in what is now Hungary, met a beggar one day at the gates of the Gallic city of Amiens. According to the legend, Saint Martin was so moved by the man's fate that he decided to cut his precious cloak in half. He gave the beggar half of his cloak, the other half being the official property of Rome. Legend has it that the poor man was a symbol of Christ. At night Christ himself is said to have appeared to Martinus and said something like:
"I was naked and you clothed me."
