The sandstone telegraph station of 1857 is in two adjoined sections, one being of two storeys. The north wing was demolished in 1893 except one wall incorporated in the Faulder Watson Hall next door. The building is constructed of pale brown/yellow local dressed sandstone with a gable roof of slate.
The Castlemaine telegraph office was one of four opened on the Sandhurst line in January 1857, the others being at Sandhurst, Kyneton and Gisborne ,remaining in use as a telegraph office until 5 July 1875 when the equipment was transferred to the new post office.
