At 4241 ft., Killington Peak is the second highest mountain in Vermont and Killington Ski Area boasts the second highest vertical drop in the northeast after Whiteface Mountain in the Adirondacks. And it’s big: over 70 miles of ski trails covering six distinct mountains (there’s one trail alone that’s over six miles long). They also have the largest snow making system in the world to supplement an average of 250 inches of natural snow fall per season.

I’ve skied Killington on several occasions and have always had a good time. Because it’s so big and the six mountains are interconnected, you should make sure you can make it back to your car/accommodations before the lifts close. I once had to trudge through 30 yards of waist-deep snow to get to the trail I was supposed to be on. Although there are ample trails for all skill levels, a large percentage of trails are rated for experts. The Bear Mountain area of Killington has one of the steepest trails around named ‘Outer Limits.’ For the record, I made it down ‘Outer Limits’ but it was more due to gravity than skill.

I’ve only been to Killington during the skiing season but from what I understand there are activities in the area all year long. And on a clear day, the views from the top of Killington Peak are incredible.
