The current Grand Hotel Amrâth Kurhaus in Scheveningen was rebuilt after a fire in 1887 according to plans by the German architects Johann Friedrich Henkenhaf and Friedrich Ebert. During a renovation between 1972 and 1975, some parts of the Kurhaus had to be demolished, but the two lion statues that are now next to the entrance could be saved. 1974 the building was listed with the number 17514 in the Rijksmonumentenregister.
The two mirrored statues, approximately 80cm high, are mounted on an octagonal pedestal and are made of cast and painted metal - probably iron as some rust spots have been discovered. They have each raised a paw and are touching a lantern set up in front of them. However, we think the raised paws were once supposed to be stabilizing a shield.
