HAASTRECHT • Het voormalige speelterrein ligt er troosteloos bij. De tand des tijds heeft de schommels, draaimolens en kabelbaan flink te pakken gehad. Je kan je haast niet voorstellen dat het op hoogtijdagen zwart van de mensen zag in De Kleine Betuwe in Haastrecht.

Voor de oorlog reden er wel duizend bussen per jaar met joelende kinderen uit de grote steden naar de attractie op het platteland. Sinds 2005 vinden er geen activiteiten meer plaats. Eigenaar Aad Bolk kon niet meer concurreren met moderne pretparken en sloot de deuren. Inwoners van Haastrecht zagen het met lede ogen aan. "Het werd steeds stiller in de speeltuin en bij de midgetgolfbaan", weet amateurhistoricus Cor van Someren. "Het is nu slechts pure nostalgie."

HAASTRECHT - The former playground looks disconsolate. The ravages of time have taken their toll on the swings, merry-go-rounds and cable car. It is hard to imagine that at peak times, De Kleine Betuwe in Haastrecht was packed with people.

Before the war, as many as a thousand buses filled with screaming children from the big cities to the rural attraction every year. Since 2005, no activities have taken place. Owner Aad Bolk could no longer compete with modern amusement parks and closed the doors. Residents of Haastrecht were saddened by this. "It became increasingly quiet in the playground and at the mini-golf course", says amateur historian Cor van Someren. "It is now just pure nostalgia."
