Am Mechernicher Bleiberg wurden seit dem Mittelalter Erze und andere Materialien abgebaut, allem voran Bleiglanz. Die Blütezeit des Bergbaus setzte ab Mitte des 15. Jahrhunderts ein und viele Minen entstanden in dieser Zeit in der Umgebung. Erst Mitte des 20. Jahrhunderts wurden die Minen unrentabel und der Bergbau wurde eingestellt, obwohl auch heute hier noch die größten Bleivorkommen Europas liegen. Die Grube Günnersdorf südlich der Stadt Mechernich war die letzte dieser Minen und wurde schließlich 1957 geschlossen. Damit war der Bergbau in der Eifel beendet worden.

Nach der Stillegung der Grube Günnersdorf wurde von der Stadt Mechernich auf dem Gelände ein Bergbaumuseum errichtet. Die Geologie des Bleibergs, die Geschichte des Bergbaus rund um Mechernich sowie frühere Produktionsabläufe zur Gewinnung und Verarbeitung der Erze werden hier anschaulich dargestellt und von fachkundigen Führern erklärt. Die ehemalige Mine wurde zu einem Besucherbergwerk umgebaut, das seit 1995 Besuchern offensteht.

Auch auf dem Außengelände rund um das Museum sind einige Objekte aus dem Mechernicher Bergbau ausgestellt. Dazu zählt diese originale Kipplore. Sie konnte 1,6 m³ Material befördern und wurde meist übertage zum Abtransport von Stein verwendet. Sie ist zur Veranschaulichung mit Steinen befüllt worden und steht auf einem kleinen Schienenabschnitt.

Die Ausstellungsstücke im Außenbereich können auch außerhalb der Öffnungszeiten des Museums kostenlos besucht werden.
Ores and other materials have been mined at the Mechernich Bleiberg since the Middle Ages, especially galena. The heyday of mining began in the mid-15th century and many mines were established in the area during this period. Only in the middle of the 20th century did the mines become unprofitable and mining was stopped, although the largest lead deposits in Europe are still located here today. The Günnersdorf pit south of the town of Mechernich was the last of these mines and was eventually closed in 1957. That was the end of mining in the Eifel.

After the Günnersdorf pit was closed, a mining museum was set up on the site by the town of Mechernich. The Bleiberg geology, the history of mining around Mechernich and earlier production processes for extracting and processing the ores are presented here and explained by expert guides. The former mine has been converted into a visitor mine that has been open to visitors since 1995.

Some objects from Mechernich mining are also exhibited on the outdoor area around the museum. This includes this original tipping wagon. It could carry 1.6 m³ of material and was mostly used above ground to remove stone. It has been filled with stones for illustrative purposes and stands on a small section of track.

The exhibits in the outdoor area can also be visited outside the opening hours of the museum free of charge.
