The church of St Mary was built in early medieval times within the north-eastern corner of the earthworks of a Roman fort called Canovium.

The church which is located in the small hamlet of Caerhun in the Conwy valley is reached via a short lane from the B5106.

The mounting block is located next to the lych gate. The mounting block appears to have 3 steps, with each step capped with a large stone.

The mounting block would have been used to aid the mounting and discounting of the wealthier horse-owning churchgoers.

There is a stone stile in the church wall behind the mounting block.
